A call for investing in livelihood improvement

Hi, my name is Agula J.Ogoror from Uganda in east Africa. Uganda is popularly referred to as "The Pearl of Africa".

My work brief involves programming for youth-friendly community livelihood improvements, empowering youth to improve their livelihood and that of other members of the community.

Uganda is a Republic and was formerly colonized until 1962 by Britain. More than 50% of Uganda's approx. 29 million inhabitants youth. With chronic unemployment rates have sacked and forced many a youth in Uganda to engage in very dangerous survival practices. In north eastern Uganda-Karamoja as it is called, youth are termed as 'Karacuna'.
Most Karacuna have for decades been recruited by armed warriors, thanks to the free access to illegal AK-47 arms from Somalia and Southern Sudan. These youth most of them droped out of school due to poverty and hence failtuire to raise school fees, have been involved in armed cattle rustling, highway road ambushes and armed battles in Karamoja and all their neighbors.

Conflict Resolution by Youth (CRY) Uganda Ltd, a Ugandan indigenous youth founded and youth focused non government organisation based in Uganda has for the last 4 years reaching out to the these and other vulnerable youth in Uganda and eastern Uganda.
By June 2008 60 young Karimojong warriors or Karacuna heed the call by CRY Uganda to voluntarily disarmed, re-organise , create and promote alternative livelihood away from the illegal small arms.

CRY Uganda ltd has trained some of these youth as community peace building facilitators. With the seed funding from CAFOD, CRY Uganda has been able to venture into the violence-prone communities of Karamoja region to spot-check on what the youth community peace facilitators are doing with the new skills they got from CRY Uganda training.

The results are amazing.
